Review GUILD Vintage Sunburst Mfd Westerly Ri dreadnought Reserve

Product Description: D35-SB Guild D-35 Sunburst MFD (Made in the 1970s, Westerly Production)

The D35-SB Guild D-35 Sunburst Model, manufactured in 1977 during Westerly's collaboration with the iconic Guild Guitars brand, is an exceptional acoustic guitar that boasts a rich history and striking aesthetics. This unique instrument is a replica of the original D-35 design, which was first introduced by Guild in the 1960s. However, this 1977 Westerly production edition bears certain distinctions that make it a collectible and desirable piece for both beginners and seasoned musicians.

The D-35 Sunburst MFD showcases a solid Sitka spruce top with a scalloped Adirondack spruce bracing design, providing excellent structural rigidity and tonal projection. The back and sides are crafted from beautiful mahogany, contributing to the guitar's robust and balanced sound. The combination of the solid top with mahogany back and sides allows for a well-rounded tonal quality and resonant sustain.

One of the most notable features of the D35-SB is the sunburst finish, which adds a classic and timeless look to the guitar. The sunburst pattern aging gracefully over the years further enhances the instrument's vintage appeal. The detailed binding around the body and neck complements the sunburst finish, giving the D-35 Sunburst MFD an elegant and refined appearance.

The rosewood fretboard and bridge of this guitar ensure a smooth playing experience with excellent intonation. The 25.375-inch scale length, 1-11/16-inch nut width, and 15-inch radius provide an optimal setup for versatile playing styles. Furthermore, the guitar features Guild's classic "Square-Tone" pegheads with pearl Guild logos and adjustable truss rod.

With its solid wood construction, beautiful sunburst finish, and classic design, the D35-SB Guild D-35 Sunburst MFD offers a playing experience that combines the best of vintage aesthetic charm and modern tonal quality. Collectors, enthusiasts, and musicians looking for a unique acoustic guitar with a rich history, superior craftsmanship, and iconic design will find tremendous value and enjoyment in this D-35 Sunburst MFD from the esteemed Guild and Westerly collaboration.

The Westerly Dreadnought D35 Sunburst MFD (Mahogany Finish, Demonstrator Model) is a vintage acoustic guitar manufactured in 1977. Here are some pros and cons to help you make an informed decision about purchasing this instrument:

Pros:

1. Authentic Vintage Sound: This guitar offers a rich, traditional acoustic tone that can't be replicated by modern guitars. It's an optimal choice for singer-songwriters, folk musicians, and those seeking an authentic and warm tone.

2. Solid Build: For a guitar of its age, the D35 Sunburst MFD boasts a solid spruce top and mahogany body and neck, ensuring a strong and reliable structure that can withstand regular play.

3. Distinct Character: Aged and vintage guitars come with their unique quirks and marks, adding to the instrument's aesthetic appeal and providing more character as time goes on.

Cons:

1. Wear and Tear: Due to its age, the D35 Sunburst MFD may come with visible signs of wear and tear, such as scratches, dings, and frets that might need leveling or replacement. These issues might be enticing for some but can be off-putting for guitarists seeking a pristine instrument.

2. Replacement Parts: Finding authentic replacement parts, such as pots, pickguards, or bodybinding, can be challenging and might be expensive, considering their age and rarity.

3. Limited Modifications: Vintage guitars typically cannot be readily customized or upgraded, which might limit their versatility for guitarists seeking a more contemporary sound.

Conclusion:

The Westerly D35 Sunburst MFD is a treat for acoustic guitar enthusiasts seeking a traditional sound, solid build, and an authentic vintage appearance. Despite its cons, such as wear and tear, limited modifications, and potential availability issues for replacement parts, many guitarists are willing to accept these drawbacks for the distinctive charm and character that comes with a genuinely aged instrument. If you are a folk musician or an acoustic guitar collector, this guitar could cater beautifully to your needs and preferences.

Recommendation:

If you're considering purchasing the Westerly D35 Sunburst MFD, ensure that the instrument has been thoroughly inspected by a professional luthier or guitar shop to assess its condition and estimate any potential maintenance costs. This step can help you make an informed decision and get the most value out of your investment. Additionally, make sure the instrument suits your playing style and desired sound, as it may have slight variances compared to modern acoustic guitars.

In conclusion, the Westerly D35 Sunburst MFD is a sought-after vintage guitar that provides an alluring richness in tone and character while offering some challenges in terms of condition and availability of replacement parts. Consider these factors carefully and weigh the pros and cons to decide if this acoustic treasure is the perfect fit for your musical journey.

Details:

There are also cracks in the finish. All original. Guitar has spent the last 40 years in our smoke free home. It actually sounds better than when was new.

The neck is straight and it stays in tune with accurate intonation. This is a tone machine, nice easy action, great players guitar.

Guitar is stored in the original case which provides protection but has a broken clasp and wear as well, again see pics. Since there have been questions about the top I added pictures of underside on pick guard side to show condition wood under most notable finish crack. The top of course is book matched and corresponding grain line in upper bout also has a finish crack which I think can be seen pictures.

Please see photos. Has some cosmetic wear, scratches and dings to be expected on a guitar of this age.
