Top binding with white black white black white black white all around the dark 1935 sunburst top. The guitar has never been damaged nor repaired.

The standard 40 was still part of the Martin line in 2002, but the sunburst top required a special order. Martin thin line passive pickup with matching gold end pin and gold strap button at heel original cf Martin hard shell case. All frets are original. The old timers always looked for a mahogany neck.

This 2002 Martin standard series 40 acoustic electric with 1935 sunburst top was a custom order through elderly instruments in Lansing, mi. This instrument has been well cared for with only a few spots on the finish from light use. I have never seen another one like it and it is truly a beautiful and unique instrument. This beautiful mahogany neck came from cf Martin finished in full gloss instead of satin.

Instead, the40 is adorned with elaborately purled white binding, more elaborate binding than even the45, creating a striking contrast, and with abalone pearl all over the front of the instrument. Amber finished figured steak spruce surrounding the45 abalone pearl rosette within. The grain in the neck is straight from the base of the heel to the head stock, where it turns slightly toward the treble keys.

The40 is essentially a45, the top of the line Martin, with less abalone pearl. This guitar has a tone like no other guitar I have ever played. This guitar has an exceptional neck of genuine mahogany with no wings lines in the wood which indicate a glued joint. Full body white binding with black purling also on the fret board and head stock bone nut, bone saddle, low oval neck shape, traditional mahogany block and dovetail neck joint, scalloped braces,45 heavy tortoise pick guard, solid rosewood back and sides, multi colored zing Ag back strip in the two piece back, white end cap on the heel of the genuine mahogany neck.
