The Taylor Guitars P presented in the given model year (1996 Koa Presentation Hawaiian-Taylor PS-10) is a highly-regarded acoustic guitar that is renowned for its unique design, high-quality construction, and exceptional sound. Here are some pros and cons that could help potential buyers make an informed decision about purchasing this guitar:
Pros:1. Beautiful Koa Body: This guitar features a Koa body that offers a rich, warm, and resonant tone with excellent sustain. The Koa wood, native to Hawaii, is well-known for its aesthetic appeal and sonic qualities, making it an ideal choice for those seeking a unique and representative Hawaiian guitar.
2. Solid Spruce Top: The top of the guitar is made from solid Sitka spruce, known for its ability to transmit sound efficiently. This top contributes to the guitar's excellent tonal balance and projection, essential for a great playing experience.
3. Satin Finish: The satin finish on this guitar is not only visually appealing but also increases the player's comfort by reducing the slipperiness experienced with a glossy finish. This allows a smoother and easier playing experience.
4. Genuine Hawaiian Ebony Fretboard: The black ebony fretboard further enhances the guitar's Hawaiian roots. Its hard, smooth, and dense nature ensures durability and reduces the likelihood of wear and fret-ographic damage.
5. Proprietary Expression System 2 Electronics: This guitar has Taylor's built-in pickup system, which allows for a natural, balanced, and clear amplified sound, perfect for those who need to plug in their guitar for live performance or recording.
6. Geared Tuners: The Taylor-designed tuning machines provide excellent tuning stability and holding power for the strings, ensuring the guitar stays in tune.
7. Perfect Size: With its compact size and comfortable neck, the PS-10 is perfect for players looking for a portable, travel-friendly guitar that doesn't compromise on tone and playability.
Cons:1. Price: The Koa Presentation Hawaiian Taylor PS-10 represents a significant investment in comparison to some other guitars in the market. Its high-quality components, Hawaiian Koa body, and innovative electronics contribute to its premium price tag.
2. Relatively Light Construction: Compared to more robust and solid construction methods, the Koa body is lighter, which might not provide the same resistance to damage or structural stability. Be careful with the guitar's condition during transportation and storage.
3. Limited Fretboard Inlays: Some players might prefer more elaborate or detailed fretboard inlays. The Koa Presentation Hawaiian Taylor PS-10 boasts straightforward dot inlays, which might not cater to the taste of those seeking a more ornate design.
4. Specific Tone Profile: While the Koa and solid spruce combination results in a uniquely pleasing sound, it may not suit everyone's preferences. Different wood types produce distinct tonal qualities that match various playing styles and musical genres.
5. Potential Sustain Top Cracks: Koa is a wood prone to top cracks due to the way it shrinks and swells with changes in temperature and humidity. Proper care, humidification, and temperature control can help mitigate this issue.
In conclusion, the Koa Presentation Hawaiian Taylor PS-10 is an excellent investment for guitar enthusiasts who desire a high-quality Hawaiian-style guitar with exotic Koa tonewood, solid top, and innovative electronics. It makes a beautiful addition to any collection, combining portability, playability, and artistic appeal. However, due to its price quality, it may not be the ideal choice for those on a tight budget. Ultimately, the decision to buy the Koa Presentation Hawaiian Taylor PS-10 comes down to personal preferences, playing style, and priorities.
