Buying a 1970s NOS (New Old Stock) acoustic guitar comes with its unique advantages and potential drawbacks. Here are some pros and cons that might help you make an informed decision.

Pros:

1. Vintage appeal: A 1970s NOS acoustic guitar carries the Look and feel of a vintage instrument, which can be aesthetically pleasing and emotionally appealing to many players.

2. Durability: guitars from the 70s were generally built with high-quality materials, ensuring a long lifespan and excellent craftsmanship.

3. Authentic sound: The tone of a 1970s acoustic guitar can be richer and warmer compared to most modern instruments due to the aging of the woods and the construction techniques used during that time.

4. Investment: Some vintage guitars can increase in value over time, making it a potential financial investment.

5. Unique character: Each 1970s acoustic guitar has its unique characteristics, such as small wear and tear or tonal variations, which adds to the instrument's charm.

Cons:

1. Potential for issues: With age comes the possibility of wear, decay, or missing parts. The guitar might need repairs or restoration, which can add to the overall cost.

2. Limited variations: Since you are specifically looking for a 1970s NOS model, you may have a limited selection to choose from, and you might not find the ideal specifications or features for your playing style.

3. Lack of updates: Modern guitars often come with utility features such as cutaways, electronics, and versatile pickups that can be missing in a 1970s NOS acoustic guitar.

4. Expense: The price of a 1970s NOS acoustic guitar might be higher than a new instrument due to its scarcity and vintage appeal.

5. Required maintenance: Vintage guitars might need more care, including regular strings changes, humidification, and occasional servicing to ensure that the instrument stays in good condition.

Conclusion:

A 1970s NOS acoustic guitar is a unique and compelling investment for those who love the vintage look, rich tones, and authentic character of older instruments. However, potential buyers should be prepared for extra costs on repairs or restoration and the need for more maintenance. Also, the limited selection coupled with the higher price tag might make it challenging to find the perfect match for your playing style.

Recommendation:

For players who want the look and feel of a vintage acoustic guitar, but might not be ready for the additional investment and periodic maintenance, consider looking for a previously owned acoustic guitar from a reputable dealer or luthier. They can provide some assurance of the instrument's condition and playability, while also offering a more diverse selection than the limited choice of NOS models. Alternatively, you can also opt for a modern guitar with features inspired by the 70s design and tone for a more budget-friendly and low-maintenance option.
