Review HOHNER Vintage 12-string Dreadnought Arbor Wood International Mij

The Hohner HG-912 12-string Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar is a stunning musical instrument that hails from an era of exceptional craftsmanship and dedication to creating high-quality instruments. Originally produced between 1978 and 1987, this guitar is a part of Hohner's Arbor Wood International Mij line. Its rich history and distinctive character make it an excellent choice for both beginners and seasoned musicians seeking a versatile and captivating instrument.

The Hohner HG-912 boasts a solid Spruce top, which is known for its ability to produce a bright, clear, and resonant tone. The top's grain pattern is visually appealing, adding to the guitar's aesthetic allure. The back and sides of this guitar are made of Mahogany, a popular choice for its warm, rich, and balanced tone. The combination of Spruce and Mahogany results in a well-rounded sound with a good balance between treble and bass frequencies.

The 12-string configuration of this Dreadnought guitar adds an extra layer of depth and complexity to the sound, making it perfect for playing intricate chords and melodies. The scale length of 25.4 inches ensures comfortable playability, while the nut width of 1.69 inches caters to most hand sizes.

The Hohner HG-912 features a traditional Dreadnought body shape, which provides a powerful and projecting sound. The guitar's bridge is made of Rosewood, a durable and attractive material that also enhances the overall tonal qualities of the instrument. The guitar comes with a standard 6-in-line headstock, equipped with closed-back tuning machines that ensure accurate and stable tuning.

The fingerboard and headstock overlay of this guitar are made of Richlite, a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to traditional Rosewood. The 20 frets are well-spaced, making it easy to navigate up and down the neck. The guitar's body is adorned with multiple binding, adding an elegant touch to its design.

In summary, the Hohner HG-912 12-string Dreadnought Acoustic Guitar is a magnificent instrument that combines vintage appeal, exceptional craftsmanship, and a captivating sound. Its solid Spruce top and Mahogany back and sides produce a well-balanced tone, while the 12-string configuration adds depth and complexity. This guitar is an excellent investment for musicians looking for a versatile, high-quality instrument with a rich history and unique character.

The Hohner HG-912 12-string dreadnought guitar, produced between 1978 and 1987 under the International Mij label, is an intriguing instrument for those seeking a vintage sound at an affordable price. Let's examine its pros and cons to help you make an informed decision.

Pros:

1. Authentic Vintage Tone: The Hohner HG-912 offers a rich, warm, and full-bodied tone that is characteristic of vintage 12-string dreadnoughts. The Arbor wood used in its construction adds to the guitar's unique sound.

2. Affordability: Compared to many modern 12-string dreadnoughts, the Hohner HG-912 is a more budget-friendly option, making it an excellent choice for beginners or those on a tight budget.

3. Versatility: The guitar's 12 strings provide a fuller and more complex tone that is well-suited for various genres, including folk, rock, and pop.

4. Playability: The Hohner HG-912 features a comfortable neck profile and a relatively easy-to-play action, allowing for smooth playability and minimal hand strain.

Cons:

1. Build Quality: Being a vintage instrument, the Hohner HG-912 may exhibit signs of wear and tear, such as cracks, loose tuning pegs, or worn frets. These issues may require some maintenance or repairs.

2. Lack of Modern Features: The guitar does not come with modern features such as a cutaway, electronics, or a truss rod. These omissions may be a drawback for some players, particularly those who prefer more modern instruments.

3. Action and Intonation: Due to the age of the guitar, the action and intonation may not be as accurate or consistent as a new instrument, which could impact its playability and tuning stability.

4. Limited Availability: Finding a Hohner HG-912 in good condition can be challenging, as these guitars are no longer in production and are not as widely available as newer models.

Conclusion:

The Hohner HG-912 12-string dreadnought guitar is an intriguing instrument that offers a unique vintage tone at an affordable price. Its pros include its authentic tone, affordability, versatility, and playability. However, its cons, such as potential build quality issues, lack of modern features, limited availability, and potential action and intonation inconsistencies, should be carefully considered before making a purchase.

If you are a beginner or a player on a budget seeking a vintage 12-string dreadnought with a rich, full-bodied tone, the Hohner HG-912 could be an excellent choice. However, if you require a modern instrument with advanced features or a more consistent build quality, you may want to explore other options. Ultimately, the decision depends on your individual preferences, playing style, and budget.

Details:

THIS IS THE '70s JAPANESE 12 STRING TO OWN. MADE IN JAPAN with AMAZING wood, MIJ. A previous owner used epoxy to install a block of wood onto the neck for strap button. The action is good with room for adjustments.

A passive, under-the-saddle pickup was added. If you alter, modify, change or repair the item in anyway without my consent, are accepting as is, at price paid. It has normal bumps, dings, scratches and scuffs but overall, the guitar is in very good condition with only one area of blemish worth a mention: top side neck between 9th 14th fret. The entire guitar has beautiful maple binding, with a fancy marquetry around the top and sound hole.

I have serviced the guitar. It comes with the quality hard shell case you see in pictures. I did not install new strings. You should not have to live with something you are unhappy for any reason.

Model HG-912. Cleaned the body and neck, cleaned fingerboard, polished frets. The fingerboard, frets, pick guard all look near new. It is part of my estate.

What were they thinking. In removing it ugly-ed up the finish but did no structural damage. This is a VINTAGE 1978-87 HOHNER 12 STRING DREADNOUGHT ACOUSTIC/ELECTRIC GUITAR. This one is from my personal collection. Figured ovangkol back and sides, rosewood fingerboard bridge, mahogany neck, solid spruce top.

GREAT LOOKING, SOUNDING and PLAYING GUITAR.
